The first step on the path of spirituality is karma yoga. The beauty of karma yoga is such that even if we don’t reach the ultimate goal, Self-realization, walking on this path itself brings rich dividends in the form of great joy and great peace.

What is karmayoga? Firstly, walking the path of karma yoga means fulfilling all your responsibilities, duties. As human beings, we have responsibilities towards ourselves, our family, society, the environment, Nature, God, ancestors.  Fulfilling all these responsibilities is very important. The second important aspect of karma yoga is that these responsibilities should be discharged as worship of Ishvara. My work itself becomes an act of worship. When I start doing my duties with this attitude, I start enjoying my work and it brings me great joy and peace. No doubt, when we work, we will get some result (karma phala) but we should try to enjoy the work itself. When the result comes, accept it cheerfully, without complaint. Karma yoga, the first lesson taught in Bhagavad Gita, might appear very simple but it is very profound and of vital importance for our evolution.

Another important aspect of karma yoga is that we should not try to do somebody else’s duties (pardharma). Let us take a simple example. In a house, children play and throw their toys all over the place. Then Mother comes, collects them all and keeps them in their place.Then the child goes into the bathroom and makes it dirty. Mother cleans up that as well. Instead of this the mother should teach the child to clean up once he is done playing. The duties of the child should be taught to the child from childhood. The same child grows up - as an adult citizen of the country he thinks that the government is like ‘Mother’. He litters public places thinking it is not his responsibility to clean up, ‘Mother’ will clean it. This attitude remains because we have not taught them their svadharma. Do your own duties. Don’t do the duties of another. Also don’t do adharma – that which is contrary to the welfare of others should be avoided at all levels - speech, action and thinking also. Even at the level of thought we must not entertain ill will or cause injury to another. Avoiding paradharma and adharma, one has to fulfil one’s own svadharma. Enjoy fulfilling your responsibilities and do so as an act of worship of Ishvara, the creator of this world, the one who resides in the hearts of all. Further, Bhagavan declares, “All this world is pervaded by me in my unmanifest form”.

We have to dedicate all our work to that Ishvara. For this we need not go to a temple. Wherever we are, Ishvara is present. He is all-pervading.  You only need to bring the sentiment (bhavana) into your heart that I am doing it for Ishvara –yad yad karma karoti tad tad akhilam shambho tavaradhanam – Whatever work I do is your aradhana Shambho! When we develop that attitude in heart, many of our problems which are self-created, psychologically created, automatically disappear.

In the Bhaja Govindam Bhagavan Sankaracarya says, there is no cause for worry, chinta. There is someone who is taking care of you as well as the whole world. In the Gita also Bhagavan assures us: those who do my chintan, I will do their chinta,I will take care of them.They have no cause for worry. But those who don’t do my chintan, they will have to keep on doing chinta.

Doing our duties as worship of God results in peace and purity of heart. Doing what we should not do and not doing what we should to do creates agitation and turmoil within us.
