Salutations to the Supreme Ruler

Ishvara comes from the root – ‘to control’. Ishvara is the Master, the Ruler, the Controller and the King of the whole world. When we go to a new place, we are curious to know where the ruler, the king or president lives. We cannot see him, but we see his soldiers, administrators and other officers, through whom he controls the kingdom. Similarly, God or Guru manages the work of this whole world by the delegation of His power. Through these, He controls the world that functions under His laws.

The Supreme Law Maker

In a monarchy, the king is the law maker and hence above the law. He is also above the Supreme Court. He is the President. The Supreme Court is guided by the rules, but the king is even above the laws. Lord Yama can be compared to the Supreme Court. He ensures the maintenance, preservation and smooth functioning of all the laws, but even he does not have the power to pardon. At the level of the universe, God alone has this unique power.

We can definitely be pardoned for our omissions, but the appeal must be sincere, or else we have to face the consequences of our actions. There is a general feeling that we have to suffer for our sins. This is not always necessary. If we ask for pardon, we need not suffer. The Lord is an ocean of compassion. He also has the supreme power to pardon. He can change anything, even time. He takes you back in time or forward into the future. We experience this in the dream world. Often in our dreams, we travel to different places and different time periods.

The Guru is Ishvara alone. His diktat holds sway even over the phenomenal forces. He is their Master. In several instances, Gurudev performed miracles, showing his mastery over the elements. At times, he would have the class in the open, under the shadow of thick clouds. He would then tell us, “I have told the clouds to wait till the class is over.” Sure enough, as soon as the class would finish, the heavens would open and it would pour and pour.
